Lots of winners for last month's Mario 64 challenge:LHCGreg, JohnnyMEMEman420, Toaster78, FroggyAirplane, rlbond86, ThatGuyForty2, Skycoasterman, Cipher-, DrayanoX, Cargo9948, LonesockOW, Zedathius, DadTier, and SaberCrossed.I think that's all of them, but if I missed you let me know in the comments and I'll update. Awesome everyone, it was cool to have a month with so many people doing the challenge. Wild Guns.
Developer(s): Natsume. Publisher(s): Natsume. Platform(s): Super NintendoThis month's game is one that took me by surprise and turned out to be a real treat. It started off with me doing some organization on the overall GotM list and looking into Sunset Riders and then stumbling into this one as other western themed game, and then here I was playing this amazing game and didn't want to stop. Wild Guns is a really fun and interesting hybrid kind of game. It's kind of like a light gun shooter without the light gun, and in the 3rd person instead of being a rail shooter. I've seen it described as a 'space western' and I'm gonna roll with that because 'space western' sounds cool as shit. You play as Cliff or Annie (riffs on Clint Eastwood and Annie Oakley, I presume), going through a big shooting gallery of stages taking out cowboys, robots, automated weaponized trains, and more with a variety of guns, dynamite, and bombs.
There's a story here, but I don't know it well, so sorry for that. TL;DR version is Annie's family was murdered and she hires Clint, a bounty hunter, to get revenge on anybody and everybody involved. The gameplay combines a lot of simple components together to collectively create a chaotic and fast paced whole. Pressing left or right on the d-pad moves your character across the screen area, but also moves the cursor to shoot. Pressing Y shoots, and you can't move while shooting. Rapidly tapping Y throws a lasso that stuns enemies, locking them in place. B jumps; B again in the air double jumps.
You can't jump while shooting (nor shoot while in the air jumping), but pressing B while shooting dodges instead. X does a screen clearing 'super' bomb sort of attack. And that's about it in terms of controls. While it sounds simple, trying to shoot at stuff while also dodging bullets, jumping out of the way of attacks (dynamite, enemies that melee attack, lassos, etc) gets crazy, and it's an absolute blast. They game is an audible joy.
The sound effects are nice, and the music is catchy and enjoyable. I ended up finding the soundtrack in SPC format just to listen to at work because I liked it so much. Visually it's very nice looking, and kind of cool how in some levels they fake perspective by making enemies really tiny or scroll in from the background.
It's all got a nice sort of steampunk-robot-western vibe, like someone mashed together The Quick and the Dead with the likes of Firefly or Blade Runner and then licensed it for a 16-bit game. Sprites are clear and good looking and several of the environments have some cool destructible elements. Attention to little details like that is always a plus. One thing I'd add is that this looks to be an amazingly fun game for co-op gameplay. It plays exactly the same except you have someone else along for the ride. One thing I do wish they'd have done is added Super Scope support with the ability for one player to control the character movement and the other to do the shooting, but that's a small nitpick.
Natsume knew what they were doing with this one and they did a great job.All told it's a short game, with only six levels as far as I know (I've only beaten three so far), but it feels like it has a lot of replayability and I'd recommend checking it out. It's a unique enough game that I honestly can't think of anything else like it.Also, if you're digging this, check out Wild Guns Reloaded on Steam or your console of choice. It's a great update to the game with full widescreen resolution support, new playable characters, some new twists on some of the levels and boss fights, new levels, and four player co-op support.
It's really fun, and the new characters change things up in interesting ways.Reviews and general links:.Game of the Month Challenge! This month's challenge(s): Beat the game on normal difficulty or higher to get the flair 'Wild Gunslinger.'
